Praya dubia is a member of the order Siphonophorae within the class Hydrozoa. “They’re just an example of doing things a bit differently,” says Wilson. Praya dubia, the giant siphonophore, lives in the deep sea at 700 m (2,300 ft) to 1,000 m (3,300 ft) below sea level. It has been found off the coasts around the world, from Iceland in the North Atlantic to Chile in the South Pacific. Some zooids are responsible for feeding, some for reproduction, and others move and steer the animal through the water. Rather than growing in a more conventional way into a body with organs that carry out different functions, siphonophores consist of individual parts called zooids. Yet, a siphonophore is a single organism. The result is a biological marvel that makes us wonder just what it means to be an individual Scientists have found over 175 species of siphonophores, in habitats ranging from near-coastal regions to the ocean twilight zone and the sea floor. Siphonophores look like jellyfish, and they do belong to the same group of animals, but they build their bodies in a unique way – more like hundreds of tiny jellyfish stuck together. Based on the original books by Meomi, Octonauts is produced by Silvergate Media VSP, animated by Brown Bag Films and continues to go from strength to strength as a unique and exciting global pre. They abandon the ship just as it's blown away. Kwazii and Dashi go after it in the Gup-E and try to get pictures of it, but crash and land on the brink of an underwater geyser. “Then we just had to go on our merry way.” The Octonauts see a strange creature floating by the Octopod - a giant siphonophore. Some form rope-like chains that can grow longer than a whale. Each siphonophore is actually a colony of individual parts, called zooids, which are produced as the siphonophore grows, and stay connected together. In fact, none of its parts could function on their own. ![]() “We circled around, took some footage and a little sample of tissue,” Wilson says. Kwazii and Dashi become entangled in a strange deep-sea creature - a siphonophore - and when a geyser blasts it toward the surface, the Octonauts must stop i. A siphonophore is much more than the sum of its parts. Time was already short because the dive had run over schedule, and so the submersible pilot, controlling it from the surface, could only spend a few moments with the animal.
